Ranking on ChatGPT is not like ranking on Google

Google shows a page of links and a map. ChatGPT writes an answer. That answer usually names a small group of businesses. The BrightLocal local AI visibility study, Sept 2026 found ChatGPT names about four businesses in a typical local answer.

So "rank" is a loose word here. There is no position one through ten that stays put. There is a shortlist, and your goal is to be on it as often as possible across the questions your customers actually ask.

How ChatGPT picks local businesses

When ChatGPT answers a local question with search turned on, it reads the web much like a careful researcher would. It looks for sources that agree with each other. The usual sources are:

  • Your Google Business Profile: name, category, hours, service area, photos and reviews.
  • Your own website, especially service pages, location details and structured data.
  • Review sites like Yelp, plus trade sites such as Angi, HomeAdvisor or Houzz, depending on your field.
  • Directories and citations that repeat your name, address and phone.
  • Local news, associations and lists that mention you by name.

If those sources describe you the same way, you look like a clear, trustworthy entity. If they disagree, the AI has less reason to name you with confidence.

Why the answer changes every time you ask

Ask ChatGPT the same question twice and you may get two different lists. That is normal. The model generates each answer fresh, the search results it pulls can shift, and small wording changes in the prompt change what it looks for.

This is why one screenshot proves very little. A fair read comes from asking the same set of real buyer questions on a schedule and watching the pattern. We call that a visibility check, and we read it as a trend over months.

The step by step fix list

This is the order I work in for most local service companies. Each step makes the next one count for more.

  1. Fix your Google Business Profile. Correct primary category, real service area, accurate hours, a full services list and recent photos.
  2. Make your name, address and phone match everywhere. This is called NAP consistency. Old phone numbers and past addresses confuse machines.
  3. Give every main service its own page on your site. Say what you do, where you do it and what a customer should expect.
  4. Add schema markup so the facts on your site are labeled in a format machines read cleanly.
  5. Check that AI crawlers are allowed in your robots.txt. Some sites block them by accident.
  6. Write short FAQ answers to the questions customers ask before they hire. See answer engine optimization for how to write them.
  7. Keep reviews coming in steadily. Recent reviews show an active business.
  8. Get listed on the review and trade sites that matter in your field.
  9. Recheck on a schedule and adjust based on what the AI cites.

Google still feeds the answer

It is tempting to treat AI as a separate world. It is not. The BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found 71% of consumers use Google Search at some point in a local search, and the BrightLocal study saw Google Maps show a tracked business in 66% of local searches, against 33% for ChatGPT.

Your Google listing is also one of the sources AI reads. Work on Google helps on ChatGPT. For a side by side view, read AI SEO vs traditional SEO.

What not to fall for

Be careful with anyone who promises a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT. No one controls those answers. Not me, not an agency, not a software tool.

  • Guaranteed placement or a "number one in ChatGPT" promise.
  • Paying for fake reviews. It breaks platform rules and can get a profile suspended.
  • Stuffing keywords or city names into pages. It reads badly to people and machines.
  • Treating an llms.txt file as the main fix. It is a small extra.

What you can do is improve the sources AI reads about you and measure the results honestly.

Where to start this week

Open your Google Business Profile and read it like a stranger. Then ask ChatGPT three questions your best customers ask before they call. Note who gets named and which sites get cited. That gives you a rough first snapshot.

If you want a fuller picture with a set of real buyer questions and the sources behind each answer, that is what our AI visibility audit does, at no cost.
